One brick at a time

One brick at a time

Will Smith on building walls

When I read Will Smith’s Autobiography’, I loved one of his early stories about his Daddio getting him to build a wall in front of his shop with his brother.

When Will complained to him that it was impossible Daddio just said  ‘Your job is to lay this brick perfectly. Then the next one. Don’t be worrying about no wall!’.

You build a wall one brick at a time.

And if it is not perfect – you take it off and do it again.

You do this because you know if it is not right – it will impact on the whole wall.

That is why you need to focus all your efforts on getting that brick laid perfectly first time. If you are concentrating on the wall you are not concentrating on the brick!

To be productive, to deliver projects, to ship new ideas and to make your dreams come alive – the same simple recipe is true.

You build a successful career one brick at a time.

As Will suggests it is not all about grand gestures; but rather good habits and small consistent steps each day that compound over time and get you there.

You build your ideal Work^Life guided by your vision and plans one brick at a time too!

Often when I find myself overwhelmed the likelihood is that the wall not the brick is my focus!

The question to find the brick is: What matters most now?

So when you get stuck or overwhelmed – where it all seems too big and impossible – just find that next brick and put all your effort into laying it to the best of your ability!

And then go find the next brick!
